According to statistics just released
by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics
(BTS), American manufacturers and related industry shipped 11.7 billion tons of
goods valued at over $13.6 trillion in 2012. Trucks moved approximately 70
percent of these goods, both by value and by weight. Multiple mode shipments
represented about 13 percent of these goods by value but only 3 percent by
weight, while rail represented 16 percent of goods shipped by weight and 3
