More than 60 transportation and supply chain executives met at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel in southern California to network and learn from other shippers. The event was sponsored by Special Dispatch of California.

Here are just a few highlights shared during the shipper's panel discussion from these panelists:

Alex Albertini is the Director of Logistics and Trade Compliance for Charlotte Russe Inc., a growing, mall-based specialty retailer of fashionable, value-priced apparel and accessories. Charlotte Russe operates more than 500 stores throughout 45 states and Puerto Rico. Albertini mentioned that his three business priorities that impact the retailer's supply chain are cost containment, partnerships that will drive their success forward, and growing intelligently by identifying the right markets.

Mitch Bentz is Director of Logistics for Lewis Hyman Inc., and said his biggest challenge is the need to achieve and execute consistently new and lean supply chain models, while continuously tweaking those models, as customers' requirements are dictating change at the quickest pace in recent years.

Mike Dunn is Manager of Traffic and Transportation for Cambro Manufacturing, which manufactures products for the hotel and foodservice industry, and is a global supplier, with distribution centers in the United States, Canada, The Netherlands, and China; and manufacturing plants in Huntington Beach, as well as overseas in Turkey, Germany and China. Dunn explained that he is continually working on true partnerships with carriers, and educating them to make sure they fully understand Cambro's business goals and objectives. He also regularly educates his internal people on the importance of transportation and supply chain strategy, and how trucking companies operate.

Frank Quint is Director of Domestic Transportation at Restoration Hardware, the world's leading luxury home furnishings purveyor, offering furniture, lighting, textiles, bathware and décor. Quint said one of his biggest challenges is keeping pace with the growth of his organization, and just finished reconfiguring the last of four DCs in his distribution network. A major piece of that challenge, he said, is aligning his carrier base and transportation resources with the retailer's enterprise. "Capacity also is going to be a premium,” he said, reiterating that the driver shortage continually contributes to the capacity challenge, and the fact that most carriers are not investing into new equipment.
