NASSTRACs Position on Transportation Modes, The Environment, and Shipper Choices

NASSTRAC continues to publish position papers that outline the background on key legislative issues that have the potential of having an impact on transportation, as well as shipper and carrier concerns and NASSTRAC's position on the legislation.

The most recent position paper outlines the concern over legislation that would encourage the transition of freight from over-the-road transportation to other transportation modes without appropriate consideration of the best modal option. The paper emphasizes that NASSTRAC supports reduced emissions, reduced reliance on imported oil, minimizing congestion and other environmental goals. However, decision-makers in Washington and elsewhere are mistaken if they think motor, rail, water and air carriers are interchangeable, and that restructuring the nation’s transportation system to serve non-transportation goals can be accomplished without increased costs, decreased efficiency or economic disruption.
