Lowe’s Named NASSTRAC 2008 Shipper of the Year Award

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—NASSTRAC recently announced that Lowe’s Companies received the 2008 NASSTRAC Shipper of the Year award. NASSTRAC, a non-profit association that provides education, advocacy, provider relations, and networking for transportation and logistics professionals, created the award 17 years ago to annually recognize a shipper that has demonstrated excellent in recent transportation and/or logistics strategies. A wide range of manufacturers, retailers, and other companies managing freight through their supply chains have received the award through the years.

Lowe’s received the award specifically because of strategic initiatives they have developed in recent years to improve their transportation system due to rapid expansion, according to Brian Everett, NASSTRAC’s executive director. Key drivers supporting these initiatives have been providing superior customer service, and transportation objectives that reduce the cost, time, and variability of inbound shipment with no delivery errors. To succeed in these initiatives, Lowe’s encouraged its key transportation partners to achieve specific, measurable goals. Lowe’s is the second-largest home improvement retailer in the world, with sales last year recorded at $48.3 billion. The company serves more than 14 million customers a week at more than 1,575 home improvement stores in the United States and Canada.

“Lowe’s is very aware of the fact that we cannot do it alone,” said Robert Long, director of transportation development and LTL/parcel transportation and NASSTRAC member. As part of this realization, Lowe’s created a core carrier program that encouraged an absolute focus on four key measures that are the basis of the retailer’s “Superior Customer Approach.” According to Long, the ideal carrier that now fits in its core carrier program “is one that has the optimal mix of geographic coverage, effective service and cost, the right amount of capacity to grow with Lowe’s, and the willingness to work with us and our product suppliers to constantly improve business processes and service levels.”

The NASSTRAC Shipper of the Year Award, co-sponsored by Logistics Management magazine, will be recognized at the upcoming NASSTRAC Logistics Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla., April 26-29, 2009.
