Updated: Tuesday, August 27, 2013
Management and labor negotiators in the East and Gulf Coast port contract talks have agreed to a 90-day extension of a contract that was set to expire on Sept. 30, giving both sides more time to "focus on the outstanding core issues in a deliberate manner." The announcement was made last Thursday from George Cohen, Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and came after both with FMCS as mediator. Coincidentally, the announcement was made at the same time shipper panelists at NASSTRAC's Regional Meeting in Memphis were discussing their concerns about the potential shutdown and many shipper expressed their relief at the extension.
