House and Senate lawmakers are expected this week to approve a long-term highway bill. The current short-term agreement expires on Friday, December 4. If passed and signed into law, the long-term agreement would provide $305 billion in surface transportation funding over the next five years, with $205 billion going to highways.
The Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act, or FAST Act, formally reauthorizes the collection of the 18.4-cents-per-gallon gas tax and 24.4-cents-per-gallon diesel tax, and also includes $70 billion in "pay-fors" to close a $16 billion deficit in annual transportation funding that has developed as vehicles have become more fuel-efficient.
NASSTRAC supports the long-term highway bill and encourages members to send a letter to your lawmakers asking them to vote for the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act. (The Hill)
